Week4

First, I'll present some updates of my project of image segmentation. Then, some experience in OR will be mentioned.
  1. Updates in project:
    1. Algorithm:
      Overview: A function that segments smoothed suprathreshold regions into regions corresponding to individual somata;
      Step1:Find the regions corresponding to individual somata, larger than minimum cell size, and small than maximum cell size;
      Step2: Identify the regions large than maximum cell size, that need to be segmented;
      Step3: Segment each large regions and put the corresponding masks edges:
                 Establish generic search trajectory segments, 16 emanating radially from a center;
                 For each large regions:
                       Shift the search trajectory to the pixel location of maximum Z score;
                       Search trajectory are continued until certain conditions are achieved.
    2. Results:

  2. Surgery shadowing:
    I have shadowed three surgeries this week. The first one is to get a biopsy from the arm of patient. The second one is craniotomy, in which the patient's head was opened to put electrodes onto the surface of brain. The patient was suffering from epilepsy. These electrodes are used to record the neural activity of the patient, and by taking EEG data from these electrodes, doctors can find the source of epilepsy. In another surgery next week, doctors will remove the source area in the brain with the electrodes.
    The third surgery was very impressing to me. In the first part, biopsy of brain tumor was collected. Then, the patient was transferred to the MRI section in the basement for brain tumor laser ablation. MRI was used as a real time imaging guidance to locate the focus of laser to the position of tumor. It took 2 hours for tumor ablation. In this process, the focus of laser is carefully tuned to remove the whole tumor.
